Gu Jianlin a Chinese-American woman athlete made the decision to represent China, her mother's country, despite growing up in the United States. It was a moment of tension between the countries that surprised many Americans. Many called her a traitor. Her decision to represent her mother's country was unpopular and society treated her differently if she had stayed in the United States.
Feminism
This study examines the use of feminist ideologies in women’s athletic advertising. Although the sample is small, it provides some insight into the female athletes and the role of feminist marketing in athletic products. It may inspire further research. However, larger samples might lead to more solid conclusions. Further research could also help to explore the relationship between feminism and athletic values.
Size
News reports about the size of female Asian athletes often focus on their physical strength and beauty. This type of commentary has been a persistent feature of Asian-American Olympics coverage. Despite being stereotyped, Asian-American athletes excel at many other sports.
Fragility
Asian American women have been making it to the Olympics. They've been scrutinized and criticized by both the national team and fans. Zhu Yi, a Chinese-born athlete who fell during the team event, is one recent example. Zhu gave up her American citizenship to compete for China and "stole" the spot from a Chinese-born athlete.
Color
There is a complex history behind the Asian-American female athlete's color in sports. Though most female athletes in the US and most Asian countries are white, there are some Asian women who have achieved greatness in sports. Chinese athletes have been the most well-known and successful in non-Asia sports. There have been many Asian female athletes who are not fortunate despite their exceptional talent and drive.
Status
Asian female athletes have become more prominent by winning medals in international competitions and at the Olympic games. Many of them double up as role models or diplomats, speaking out against injustices in their professional and private lives. We are proud to present seven Asian female athletes in this issue of Vogue Singapore.
Race
There has been a long history of stereotypes about race, especially in competitive sports. Asian athletes are often portrayed as weak, fragile and unfit for modern sports. Despite this, Asian women have become well known in the athletic arena and are increasingly being covered in news stories. Many stories focus on psychological characteristics and physical strength of the athletes.
