The history of soccer in the US is a mixed bag of overly ambitious owners, poor investments, and aging players. Although the NASL was created in the 1960s and operated like a major league but with fewer attendances, it wasn't as successful. In the 1970s and 1980s, indoor soccer took control. There were strong fan attendances but no financial success. The MISL folded in 1992 but its legacy lives on in the current American soccer pyramid.
Major League Soccer
Major League Soccer's American League of Professional Football's success is remarkable, but it has had a somewhat obscure history in the United States. It was established in 1996. There were 10 teams, and it was then divided into two conferences: Eastern and Western. The popularity of Basketball and Football in the USA meant that the sport was initially overlooked. It was not until many years later that it began to gain popularity. The league now has over 300 participating teams.

Soccer was first played on American soil in the late 1800s. After the Great Depression, soccer was a huge success. The American Soccer League was formed in 1920. Its founding teams were drawn mostly from urban areas. The US hosted more World Cups as the game became more popular. The US is home to more soccer fans than any other country. A brief history of US soccer is described below.
U.S. Men’s National Team
The U.S. National Team Men's has participated in many major international tournaments. The men won in 1994 the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. They then went on to win CONCACAF Gold Cup. They beat Canada in overtime at Pasadena's Rose Bowl in August 1994. This was the first time the United States defeated Canada in a game, and it set a record in U.S. soccer history.
Women's National Team
In 1987, the women's national team was founded and began playing competitive international soccer. The team played in a series of games against Italy, but their results were mixed. They lost three games to Denmark, while drawing one. The team's greatest win came in a game against the Soviet Union, which the US won 8-0. However, the team's luck didn't last forever.

U.S. football players made World Cup appearances
This year's qualifiers will mark the fourth World Cup appearance for the U.S. National Team. The U.S. Men's National Team had four wins and one draw in the qualifying round. The U.S. men’s team won the Nike U.S. Cup as well as the Gold Cup. They also won the World Cup for only the second time in their history.
