Carla Esparza practices mixed martial arts. She competes in UFC's strawweight division. She is currently UFC's strawweight champion. This is her second title defense after losing her title in her first title defense against Cyborg at Invicta FC 6: Coenen II (2013).

Carla Esparza, a professional mixed-martial artist from the United States, is Carla Esparza. She competes as a women's fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). She is the UFC Women's Strawweight Champion, and she has also won two UFC titles.

Esparza rose first to prominence in 2012, after signing with Invicta FC. Invicta FC2 in 2012 saw Sarah Schneider defeat Esparza. Esparza got on the back of Schneider early with a heel hook and then attacked the Argentine. She briefly attempted to apply a rear naked choke, but she was unable to control her opponent.

She is currently ranked #4 in UFC's women's strawweight rankings as of January 2021. Esparza, who won the Ultimate Fighter 20 women’s straighweight tournament in 2014, made her UFC debut.

Carla Esparza's record does not look perfect. She has lost against Jessica Andrade, Claudia Gadelha and Randa Markos. She has also fought close calls against Marina Rodriguez, Weili Zhang, and Jessica Andrade. This could be a red flag, considering her five-fight winning streak.

She lost her first title defense at Invicta FC 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen II (2013)

Coenen failed to stop Cyborg’s relentless attack, despite an opening round that featured both fighters performing leg kicks. Cyborg won the second round with a takedown, landing a series punches. Coenen attempted to escape while Cyborg landed a few power punches in the second round.


Cyborg will likely defend her featherweight title versus Coenen. The Strikeforce former featherweight champion won their fight by TKO. Coenen has a record of two victories in his last fights. The winner will take on either Ayako or Carla Hamasaki.

In 2007, she sustained nerve damage.

Carla Esparza was able to return to fighting in the last few years despite nerve damage sustained in 2007. Rose Namajunas defeated her to win the UFC strawweight title in May. She is expected to defend her title in November against Zhang Weili, the former champion. Recently, she posted an update on social media regarding her fight camp.

Esparza was hospitalized after the accident. Although her hospital bill was more than $30,000, Esparza committed to fighting. Invicta FC 7 saw Maya Hamasaki fight her again. She later fought Claudia Gadelha, but Gadelha withdrew due to stomach illness.

Rose Namajunas beat her to the title twice.

Rose Namajunas & Carla Esparza, both former women's lightweight champions, have faced each in two title fights. Namajunas took the title in April, and he retained it in November. The bout was close throughout, but neither fighter landed a knockout. Esparza won by 48 to 47.

Esparza was 3-3 for 29 months before this title fight. But, her victory over Virna Januarydiroba in April 2019 set up a five-fight win streak. She then beat Yan Xiaonan during a COVID/quiet UFC APEX Las Vegas fight, finishing in just eight minutes. She defended her title by knockout in round one of the UFC APEX event in Las Vegas, June 2019.
