Coach Tina Estrada and her San Jose State women's soccer team are on a roll. We discuss Estrada's story and the Spartans' recent successes. We also cover the university’s mental health resources to student-athletes.

Estrada's success

Estrada, who became assistant coach of the women's soccer program at San Jose State in 2017, has a similar pedigree to Hanson. Estrada was an All American college soccer star and was also a member the U.S. national under-17 soccer team. Estrada played in four NCAA tournaments and was an all-WCC forward at Santa Clara. She was named NSCAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015.

Estrada, a Fremont native, was awarded the Mountain West Tournament twice. She was also named National Assistant Coaches of the Year. She has coached Spartans to two NCAA Tournaments. Her teams have won five consecutive conference tournaments.

Recent success at SJSU

A number of players can be credited for SJSU's recent success with women's soccer. Most notable was Dorthe hoppius, who was named the team's MVP. But, she will not return as a Spartan for the 2018 season. Also on the team, sophomore Jamilecxth Becerra was named Mountain West Newcomer of the Year after netting seven goals, including five game-winning ones. In addition, Darriell Franklin was named the MW defensive player of the year and named to the All-MW first team.

The new Spartan facilities are also responsible for this success. Spartan Beach and Spartan Baseball Practice Facility are recent additions. These two facilities are not the only additions to the campus. The Spartans also plan to open their Spartan Athletics Center next spring.

Career of Tina Estrada, Coach

Estrada has been the interim head coach for the San Jose State women’s soccer team over the past two-months. Estrada has been a Spartans assistant since 2004 and most recently was an Associate Head Coach. Lauren Hanson left after eight seasons and she was resigned. Hanson was the school's winningest coach.

Estrada was a star player at Santa Clara University. She has also been an excellent assistant coach and associate head coach for many programs. Now, she is poised to become one of the most promising young head coaches in division one women's soccer. Estrada is a great teacher, has excellent communication skills, and can lead.

SJSU's mental healthcare resources for student athletes

There are several mental health resources available to SJSU student-athletes. Many resources are designed to address the athletes' individual needs. Support for Sport can help athletes locate mental health referrals, and allow them to share their mental health concerns with each other. LGBTQ+ support includes stories and perspectives of being gay or lesbian in sport. ULIFELINE offers college mental health resources. Counseling Services also offers a page that provides self-help for student athletes. Health and Wellness Education offers a website with lots of information about mental and physical health topics.

SJSU's Counseling and Psychological Services Department provides students with high quality services. The department examines every individual to determine if they are ready to be productive members in society. The department is located on the third level of the Student Wellness Center and offers counseling for a wide variety of issues.
