Emily Sonnet's goal

Emily Sonnett is one of the most accomplished players in the United States women's soccer league. She was a First-Team All-American two-time and the Most Outstanding Defense Player at 2014 NCAA Championships. She won the ACC Defensive Play of the Year in 2015. She also won the ESPNW Soccer Player of the Year award. After graduating UVA, she was entered into the NWSL draft. She scored her first pro goal against the Western New York Flash in the semifinals of the 2016 NWSL Championship. Eventually, she earned her first senior-level cap for the U.S. and was an alternate at the Rio Olympics.


Canada's energy

Canada's team was energetic during the first match against the U.S. At the half, both teams were tied at 1-0. Canada's energy level remained high throughout the match. It continued to be lively as it progressed. While the United States had more energy at the bench, Canada showed great determination and set the pace.

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick

Emily Sonnet's penalty shot broke a record that stood for 969 mins. She accepted the penalty kick and scored despite wearing a cast to her right arm. She scored her first international goal with the strike. Sonnett scored the goal at 34 minutes. Ashley Sanchez also scored in the 34th minute.
