The History of Soccer in the US

Overly ambitious owners, poor investments, aging players have all played a part in the history of American soccer. The NASL was established in 1960 and managed to attract a large number of fans. Indoor soccer was established in the 1970s and 1980s. It saw strong fan support, but also faced financial difficulties. Although the MISL folded in 1992 it is still part of the American soccer pyramid.

Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer has a long history in America, despite its success. It was founded in 1996 and consisted of 10 teams. The conference was divided into the Eastern and Western. It took many years for the sport to gain widespread popularity. The league now has over 300 participating teams.

Soccer was first played in America in the late 1800s. The Great Depression saw the country grow rapidly and soccer became a popular sport. The American Soccer League was created in the 1920s, and its foundation teams were drawn from industrial towns. As the game became more mainstream, the US began to host more World Cups. The US is home to more soccer fans than any other country. Below is a brief history of US soccer.


U.S. Men’s National Team

The U.S. Men's National Team made many appearances at major international tournaments. In 1994, they won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. The men went on win the CONCACAF Gold Cup that year. They beat Canada by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Pasadena's Rose Bowl. This was the first ever time that the United States beat Canada in a soccer match. It also set a record for U.S. soccer.

Women's National Team

In 1987, women's soccer was started in competitive international soccer. The team played a series games in Italy, with mixed results. They lost three games to Denmark, while drawing one. The team's greatest win came in a game against the Soviet Union, which the US won 8-0. However, the team's fortunes didn't last forever.

U.S. Players make World Cup appearances

The U.S. National Team Men's will make its fourth World Cup appearance with this year’s qualifiers. The U.S. Men's National Team completed the qualifying cycle with four wins, one draw and two losses. The U.S. men’s team won the Nike U.S. Cup as well as the Gold Cup. They also won the World Cup for only the second time in their history.
